#CelebratingStudentSuccess Congratulations to Harker Heights High School’s Jaeyoung Cho, who recently played his way into an elite group of Texas musicians and earned Outstanding Performer following his performance during the University Interscholastic League Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest in May.

Outstanding Performer is the contest’s highest individual honor and awarded to a small percentage of students who participate.

“It feels amazing to be recognized,” Cho said. “Honestly, I would have never expected to receive this award, since not a lot of people do. So when I saw the ‘OP’ label next to my name on the results website, I was almost frozen in shock.”

At state event, musicians are tasked with performing advanced repertoire mostly from memory, and are evaluated based on statewide standards. Cho, an incoming junior and a member of the Harker Heights orchestra program under the direction of Joshua Kroft and Michael Resetar, performed the fourth movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

Congratulations to Killeen ISD Police Officer Cary Spate, who received the esteemed 2026 State of Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Valor!

Officer Spate was presented with the prestigious state recognition Friday, June 26, at the Texas State Capitol in Austin by The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

The honor highlighted Officer Spate’s heroic efforts at the Killeen Mall on Dec. 21, 2024, when she, without hesitation, rushed into a dangerous situation and took action, rendering aid to injured bystanders after a suspect rammed a truck through the entrance to JCPenney’s as holiday shoppers ran for their lives.

#CelebratingExcellence: Killeen ISD is proud to be featured in the June/July 2026 issue of TASB's Texas Lone Star magazine for the inspiring work of Reeces Creek Elementary, Future Teachers Club!
The program connects fifth-grade students with Education & Training students from the Killeen Career Center, giving younger students an early look at careers in education while building leadership, communication and empathy through meaningful mentorship.
"My teachers always show respect and kindness to me," said fifth-grader Edith Cruz. "I want to do the same thing and make kids feel happy and comfortable."

A handful of elementary schools across the district were bustling with busy minds this week during Camp Invention and Camp Pursuit.

Innovation, critical thinking, teamwork, skill and talent were on full display as enthusiastic and curious students expressed their creativity through a variety of hands-on activities. Many were eager to share their ideas, explain their processes and show off what they had created.

The Killeen ISD Fine Arts High School Theatre Camp wrapped up Thursday with a delightful, dramatic doubleheader featuring productions of “Gathering Blue” and “The Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime at Chaparral High School’s auditorium.

Two weeks of rehearsals, stage, sound, light and costume prep, resulted in two outstanding performances. Kudos to all the students and teachers who worked under the spotlight and behind the scenes to bring these stories to life!

National recognition for Killeen ISD! 🏆
Andrea Dykes recently accepted the Family Engagement Champion Award from the Family Leadership Council on behalf of Killeen ISD at the Family Leadership Summit in San Diego.
The award recognizes organizations that create meaningful and lasting family engagement opportunities. Killeen ISD was honored for successfully launching Parenting Partners at 46 campuses this past school year and strengthening partnerships between families and schools across the district.

🎉 #CelebratingSuccess: Killeen ISD has been named Lemonade Day Fort Hood Area's 2026 Partner of the Year! 🍋🏆
This recognition comes after an incredible year of growth, with KISD helping increase participation in the program from approximately 60 student entrepreneurs in 2025 to more than 400 students in 2026! 🤯

Last week, middle school and high school students attended the KISD Fine Arts Orchestra Camp at Nolan Middle School. The four-day camp provided students with opportunities to strengthen their musical skills through focused instruction, collaborative learning, and performance practice!! #WeAreKISD
